Ward 4 member Margaret McKenna served as a White House deputy counsel during the early years of President Jimmy Carter’s administration and later as Deputy Under Secretary of Education. She recalls Carter’s “legacy as a humanitarian” in the December 30 issue of The Boston Globe.
For the article written by Tonya Alanez, Margaret comments, “The true democracy that he was talking about included equality for women and people of color, people who were different. He always wanted to do the right thing. That was difficult sometimes, made him unpopular sometimes….He opened the doors for women and people of color in the judiciary for the first time, and that has lasted. No one met his record for decades.
He truly believed that each human being had the right to opportunity.”
President Jimmy Carter died on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
